IMO its very much a "character interpretation in the eye of the beholder" where fanfic is an interesting way to discover just how many varying interpretations of a character there are, OOC or not.

Along with OOC, sometimes fandom treats popular headcanons as canon and it makes enjoyment difficult when you don't subscribe to them.

As someone who started writing back in 2005 (help I'm old) I"ve seen the progression of fanfics and how much more "accepted" it has become. But that doesn't mean its fully accepted everywhere still.

I wrote fanfic as a teen and it gave me the confidence to find and hone my writing style without having to make up entire casts and settings. I write and sell original stuff now but fanfic was an invaluable space for me!
